Until you have held a tiny puppy in your arms as it kissed your face with slobbery puppy breath and felt the love,
Until you have held an injured or severely ill dog in your arms and felt their pain,
Until you have looked into the eyes of a tired aging senior dog and felt their wisdom,
And until you have seen and understood the look in your dogs eyes that tells
you their time on earth with you is over .... and you humanely let them go,

...until you experience these things, it is difficult to understand the life of a rescuer.

We find beauty in the most incomprehensible places and the otherwise homely faces.
It is our gift to see beyond the dirt, terror, sadness and defeat and find the true soul that lies within.

...we are rescue.

Without foster homes, we would not be able to provide a second chance for so many loving and deserving animals.

FOSTER HOME GUIDELINES

Before applying for the volunteer position of Foster Home, please read the following carefully. In order to qualify to foster a pet from us, you must:

    1. Be 21 years of age or older.

    2. Be willing to give weekly updates to the owner of the animal.

    3. Be willing to provide loving attention and proper care for the animal while it is in your care.

    4. Understand that the Humane Society of Northwest Louisiana, Inc. (referred to as HSNWLA) has the right to REMOVE an animal from a foster home if it is in the best interest of the animal and/or the foster home.

    5. Everyone in the family has discussed becoming a foster parent. Remember that a companion animal will be a part of the entire family and will need the love and guidance of every family member.

    6. HSNWLA foster care placements are not to exceed more than 30 days. Exceptions to this predetermined length of stay can be made on a case by case basis.

    7. For the protection of all parties client confidentiality is a critical matter. All HSNWLA foster care providers receive training on issues related to confidentiality and sign a confidentiality agreement.

    8. Any animal in the HSNWLA Foster Care Program belongs to the HSNWLA and under no condition or circumstance is it to be given away, sold or in any manner relinquished to a third party.

    9. Once home with the animal, expect a period of adjustment. We recommend that you do not try to integrate the foster animal with your pets for ten to fourteen days. If you maintain the animals together before this time has elapsed, you are taking a grave risk with the health of both your personal animals and with the foster animal. Foster animals need time and space to make themselves comfortable in their new environment. Keep the animal contained either in a separate room or a crate, with all of its needs in close proximity.

    10. After agreeing to accept a placement in your home, arrangements will be made for you to pick up the animal. We will expect you , the foster parent, to supply the food and/or litter unless other arrangements have been made with HSNWLA.

    11. Please remember foster work is sporadic. There may be long periods of time you won't hear from us. You will continue to be on our HSNWLA Foster Home Program list until you request removal.
